Kapok is a natural product in the form of fiber. Kapok or kapok randu is a tropical tree belonging to the ordo Malvales and the family Malvaceae. This plant originates from northern South America, Central America and the Caribbean.


This tree is commonly found in South America and Asia, specifically in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. In Indonesia, kapok trees grow along the roadsides. When the fruit blooms, the atmosphere on the streets resembles a snow forest because of the kapok fibers scattered under the tree.


This tree can grow up to 60-70m high. The tree trunk can reach a diameter of 3 meters. The roots of the kapok tree spread horizontally on the ground surface. The trunk can tower with or without branches. Thorns are also often found on the kapok tree trunk.

This plant will grow well at an altitude of <500 meters and a night temperature of less than 17 degrees Celsius. This plant likes high rainfall, around 1500-2500 mm/year. Kapok plants are easily damaged by strong winds.

All the potential health benefits of kapok are generally used as alternative medicine so that there is no international standardization regarding the application of kapok plants in the biomedical field officially.
